HAWKER HURRICANE - Jim
Pepino
Review by Chuck Spencer IMAA 821
Now, Jim Pepino offers another super set of plans. He has drawn the Hawker Hurricane Mark IIB. This set of plans comes in three big sheets and goes for $39.00 rolled, mailed in a tube. You can get these plans for $35.00 folded, but it would be a crime to fold these. Span of model is 90 inches so would guess it to be at least quarter scale. The drawings are of the Hawker Hurricane owned by the Canadian Warplane Heritage.
PLAN SHEET ONE: Has the fuselage left
side and a top view plus the fin and rudder. Fuselage is built on
a crutch and is sheeted forward of the rear of the cockpit and
fabric covered the rest of the way back. Rear fuselage is all
stringers. No engine is shown, but one of the large Super Tigres
would fit nicely into the nose, with very little of it exposed.
Custom built retracts are available and the address is shown on
the plan for the supplier. Jim states these are pneumatic and are
super strong in scale form. Fin and rudder are built up of balsa
and have scale hinging and rudder is cable operated.
PLAN SHEET TWO: Shows the complete wing
and all the ribs. The wing has three spars of bass or spruce. The
front two spars are 3/8 square top and bottom of the ribs with
shear webbing and the rear spar which forms the aileron cutout is
quarter square. The wing is built in three sections and joined by
dihedral joiners. The wing is then sheeted. Flaps are shown but
are optional. Ailerons are of the Friese type. Installation is
shown for Millman retracts.
PLAN SHEET THREE: Has all
the fuselage bulkheads and stab and elevator which are similar
construction to the fin and rudder, with unique hinging system
that is scale. This is an excellent set of plans and well worth
the money. It would be neat to see several of these at a meet,
instead of the usual Mustangs and Corsairs!
