MILES MAGISTER - Jim Pepino
Review by Chuck Spencer 821
This is a very excellent set of plans by
Jim Pepino fora Miles Magister. The specs are: Length - 85 1/2
inches, Span - 96 inches, Wing area - 1513 inches, Weight - 23
lbs. or lighter, Wing loading - 35 ounces, Power - Quadra 50cc.
The fuselage is constructed from 3/16 square spruce or pine,
built up with plywood in the front end, and the whole fuselage is
covered with 1/64th ply veneer. Should be very strong. Alternate
fuselage covering is 1/8th balsa sheet. I'd opt for the ply
veneer as it is easier to work with, just as light and stronger.
The scale tailwheel operates on a compression spring mounting, as
does the landing gear. How to build these items is shown on the
plans. The engine is mounted on a standoff mount from the
firewall and is completely enclosed which is very unusual. The
lifting stab is built up of balsa spruce and ply, and the
elevators are operated on the internal horn.
Tin and rudder are built
from a center core or 1/32 ply with balsa edges and ribs. The ply
core has lightening holes. I don't know if a fiberglass cowl is
available or not, but should be. Wing fillets are made from foam
and fiberglass, or carved from balsa. The fuselage is shown in
three views and isometrics and cutaway drawings. Even a
camouflage pattern and color scheme. Also lots of hints on how to
construct a successful mode. The wing is made with 1/2 inch
square Sitka Spruce spar top and bottom, with shear webs the
whole length. The wing is in tree sections, with the center
section holding the landing gear. Ribs are 1/8th balsa and the
whole wing is covered with 1/8th balsa sheet. Split flaps and how
to construct them is shown. Also on the wing plan is a drawing on
how to construct them is shown. Also on the wing plan is a
drawing on how to construct the scale working landing gear. In
all a very excellent, very well constructed plan of an airplane.
but should be a very good flyer.
